Electrical conduit, commonly referred to as conduit tubing, is a type of rigid PVC (polyvinyl chloride) tubing in white color. It is employed in construction and electrical installation projects to safeguard wiring and cable routing, facilitating the insertion or replacement of wires and cables. Commonly used diameters (outer diameter) for electrical conduit include 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 63mm, and others. In residential installations, 16mm and 20mm are frequently used. For instance, a 16mm conduit is suitable for three strands of 2.5 square millimeter wire (including the ground wire). Meanwhile, 20mm conduit is used for 4 square millimeter and 6 square millimeter wires.
The characteristics of electrical conduit are as follows:
- Smooth Surface: The surface of the conduit is smooth, with low fluid resistance, preventing scaling and inhibiting the growth of microorganisms.
- Strong Pressure Resistance: The conduit exhibits high resistance to pressure. The heavy-duty series and high-impact medium-duty series can withstand strong pressure. Consequently, they can be openly or concealed in concrete, resisting shrinkage and deformation. The heavy-duty series is particularly suitable for concealed installation in compacted and vibrated concrete.
- Excellent Flame Retardancy: The conduit demonstrates good flame retardant properties. After exposure to flames, the conduit can quickly extinguish the flame, preventing the spread of fire along the conduit. Due to its poor thermal conductivity, it effectively protects the wiring for an extended period during a fire, ensuring the operation of electrical control systems and facilitating personnel evacuation.
- Corrosion Resistance: Electrical conduit is not easily corroded, exhibiting excellent resistance to acids and alkalis. Additionally, it is not prone to damage from insects or rodents due to the absence of plasticizers inside the conduit.
- Good Insulation Performance: Electrical conduit can withstand high voltage without breakdown, effectively preventing metal and electric shock hazards.
Electrical conduit is suitable not only for normal indoor environments but also for places with high temperatures, humidity, dust, and a higher risk of fire. However, it is advisable to avoid using it in explosive environments.
